Woodworking

Timber moves as it gains or loses moisture. Build furniture, joinery or instruments from stock that has not reached the moisture content of its final environment, and the joints open, panels cup and finishes crack months later. A wood moisture meter lets you check every board before you cut.

This collection covers wood-specific meters from Wagner, Delmhorst and Protimeter. They include the Wagner Orion 910, 920, 930, 940 and 950 pinless meters and the Wagner L601-3 and L622, plus the Delmhorst J-Lite, JX-30, BDX-20, BDX-30, Navigator Pro and QuickNav. From Protimeter there are the TimberMaster and Mini C.

Choosing a wood moisture meter

Pinless for finished stock and speed. Pinless meters such as the Wagner Orion range scan a board without marking it. The 910 reads deep, the 920 shallow, and the 930 switches between the two for thicker and thinner stock.

Pin for verification and thick sections. Pin meters such as the JX-30 or TimberMaster read at the pin depth and can take hammer electrodes for the core of thick timber.

Species correction matters. Australian hardwoods differ markedly in density. A meter with species settings, or a correction chart applied properly, is the difference between a usable reading and a misleading one. See what moisture content in wood means.

Simple or data. The J-Lite gives a quick LED indication. The Orion 940 and 950 and the L622 store readings for batch records.

Sawmillers and kiln operators should see saw milling, and floor layers flooring.

Practical advice

A lovely-looking timber board can still be too wet for the room it's going into. Check the species setting, the thickness and reading depth, then take readings in more than one place rather than trusting a single spot. Timber also needs time to adjust to its intended environment; a moisture meter measures its condition today, not how it will behave after installation.
