Saw Milling

Sawmills and kiln operators measure moisture to decide when a charge is dry, to sort boards before grading, and to prove the product meets specification when it ships. That means many readings, fast, often across packs that cannot be broken open.

This collection covers Wagner's mill instruments: the L601-3 and L622 handheld meters, the L622 stack probe kit, and the L722-S (26 inch) and L722-L (40 inch) stack probe sensors. It also includes the Wagner Orion pinless range and the Delmhorst JX-30 pin meter, with or without the 26-ES hammer electrode.

Choosing for mill and yard work

Stack probes for packs. The L722 sensors read moisture inside a stacked pack without unstacking it. Choose the length to suit your pack width.

Handheld meters for sorting. The L601-3 and L622 are built for high-volume board checking. The L622 records readings for batch reporting.

Pinless for finished stock. Orion meters read without leaving pin marks, which matters on dressed and finished timber.

Pin and hammer electrode for verification. The JX-30 with a hammer electrode checks core moisture in thick sections, and it can confirm a disputed result.

Species and temperature. Kiln-hot timber and dense Australian species both need correction. Know how your meter handles each before you rely on its readings. See what moisture content in wood means.

More Wagner instruments are on Wagner moisture meters, and smaller-scale timber meters on woodworking.

Practical advice

The number on the outside of a timber stack may tell you very little about the boards buried in the middle. Choose a probe that reaches the depth you're trying to assess, and remember that species and timber temperature can change how pin readings should be interpreted. Sawmill and kiln work is about taking a useful spread of readings, not finding one good-looking figure on the top board.
