The Tramex Concrete Moisture Probe, the Determinator, extends the Concrete Moisture Encounter range. It gives in-situ moisture content readings, in the Tramex Unified Moisture Content Test Method, in both the top 19 mm layer and within the body of a concrete floor or slab down to an extendable depth of about 100 mm. It is for flooring inspectors and contractors who need to know whether moisture is coming from above or below the slab surface.
The CDK is the Determinator probe in a Tramex hard case with space allocated for your concrete moisture meter. The meter is not included.
The probe works on the principle that the electrical impedance of a material varies with its moisture content. The concrete moisture meter is pressed onto the Determinator cradle, which sits flat on the slab surface with the meter's pins fully compressed, and the probe is inserted into a pre-drilled 19 mm hole. A low frequency alternating electric field between the meter's electrodes and the probe penetrates the concrete to about 100 mm. The meter measures the very small current that flows, which is inversely proportional to impedance, and converts it to a moisture value. The probe reads from the bottom, within the body of the slab, up to the surface.
Features
Instant readings
Designed to work in the same drill hole made for the ASTM F2170 test
Separates in-slab moisture content from surface moisture content readings
Shows whether moisture is coming from below or above the slab surface
Helps determine the type and extent of mitigation if needed
Reusable and extendable, and needs no plastic hole liners

Which Determinator kit do I need?
The three kits differ by what is in the case, not by how the probe works.
CDK Concrete Determinator Kit — the probe and case only. No meter. Choose this if you already own a Tramex CME instrument.
CDTK Technicians Kit — probe plus the CMEX5 meter. The working combination for a contractor starting from nothing.
CDIK Inspector Kit — everything in the Technicians Kit plus a Hygro-i2 relative humidity probe, calibration check plate, infrared thermometer, hole liners and extension handle. Specified where a full documented survey is required.
No. The CDK is the Determinator probe and case only. The case has space for a Tramex Concrete Moisture Encounter, but the meter is not supplied. If you do not already own a CME instrument, order the Technicians Kit.
How deep does it read?
The probe gives in-situ moisture content readings in the top 19 mm layer and within the body of the slab to an extendable depth of about 100 mm. That is the point of it — a surface meter alone tells you about the surface, and a slab can be dry on top while still holding moisture below.
Do I need to drill the slab?
Yes. The probe goes into a pre-drilled 19 mm hole – the same hole made for an ASTM F2170 test – which is what allows the reading to be taken within the slab rather than at the surface.
Is this a replacement for a relative humidity test?
No, and it is not intended to be. The Determinator gives quantitative moisture content in the Tramex Unified Moisture Content Test Method. In-situ relative humidity testing is a separate measurement. Which one a specification calls for depends on the flooring manufacturer and the standard being worked to — ask us if you are unsure what a job requires.
